18 July 2006 – Heavy rain did not keep carnival-goers and flea market-hunters at bay. As a result, close to $5,000 was raised for charity.
From 8-10 July 2006, SBS Transit celebrated its Thank You Commuters’ Day cum World Cup Carnival at the open field near Buangkok NEL Station. A flea market selling goods donated by staff of ComfortDelGro Group, of which SBS Transit is a subsidiary, sold more than $2,000 worth of goods. And since SBS Transit is matching the amount, dollar-for-dollar, a total of $4,410 will go to the Handicaps Welfare Association and the Society for the Physically Disabled.
Those who purchased an item worth $2 from the Flea Market were also eligible to take part in a lucky draw. Fauzan Bin Kamsani, won for himself the top prize of a 3 day 2 night trip for 2 persons to Hong Kong. Other prizes given away included OTO Massage Chair, OTO Foot Massager, Nikon Cameras and Best Denki vouchers.
Large crowd rocked to the likes of renowned artist Jatt Ali & The Ministry of Rock, The Flix Band, Fireball, V.Mogan and Kindred Spirit. Many families also gathered to catch movies such as King Kong and the Chronicles of Narnia. A “live” telecast of the World Cup on a 200-inch projection screen drew crowds of residents. Even MPs Mr Teo Ser Luck, Mr Michael Palmer and Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim joined in to watch and soak up the exciting carnival atmosphere.
SBS Transit’s “Thank You Commuters’ Day” is an annual affair which started out in 1998. In previous years, goodies like chocolates, special limited edition bus and train models, rice, 3-in-1 coffee mixes and mints were handed out to commuters. Concerts and funds raising activities were also organised in some years.
