Punggol South Emergency Preparedness Day Exercise cum Launch of Buangkok Watch Group on 12 May 2007

The terrorist attacks on the land transport system in London on 7 July 2005, coming soon after the Madrid bombings in 2004, highlighted the continual need for vigilance and preparedness.

The Punggol South Grassroots Organisations and SBS Transit are jointly organising an Emergency Preparedness Day Exercise on 12 May 2007 at Buangkok Station. In partnership with SCDF and Singapore Police Force, the Exercise will simulate a “bomb” explosion at the station’s concourse with evacuation of passengers being carried out. The Buangkok station, however, will remain open without any disruption to SBS Transit’s North East Line (NEL) train services.

The event will be officiated by Mr Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, who is also the MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC and Adviser to Pasir Ris-Punggol GROs. He will also launch the Buangkok Watch Group which consists of a group of 10 people from the Punggol South Grassroots who are members of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

To be trained in basic knowledge of fire-fighting skills and first aid, members of the Watch Group will be on the look out for suspicious items found around the Buangkok Station areas where they will then alert the station’s manager. Besides going through the Community Emergency Preparedness Programme, the Watch Group will also go through 5 different modules conducted by the SCDF on areas such as handling unconventional threats and emergency procedures so as to be better prepared for an emergency. In addition, the Watch Group will also be trained by the Police on crime prevention and counter-terrorism issues.
