iris NextBus - General
What is iris NextBus?

iris is the acronym for Intelligent Route Information System.

iris
NextBus is our latest iris service and it offers bus arrival time estimation on a real time basis. You now have the convenience of knowing how many minutes away your bus is from your bus stop or how long more before the next bus departs from the bus interchange. iris NextBus is available on our website as well as via GPRS and sms on mobile devices.

  Top ^

How does iris NextBus predict bus arrival time?
All SBS Transit buses are equipped with Automatic Vehicle Management System (AVMS) tracking device. Their exact locations enroute can be tracked in real time basis and together with relevant route conditions/patterns, iris NextBus can provide the estimated next bus arrival times. When we experience intermittent loss of GPS signals, which do happen from time to time, bus real time locations cannot be obtained and bus schedule information is utilised instead to estimate the next bus arrival times. The degree of accuracy for the estimated arrival times under such circumstances will not be as high.

When "No current prediction" shows up instead, it means that the bus service is not operating at that point in time. Do check the operating details for the service to find out more.

iris NextBus provides commuters a convenient way to check the next bus arrival time at the office or at home before hitting the bus stops or on the go using portable devices with web access such as GPRS-enabled phone, WIFI-enabled laptop or PDA.

  Top ^

Are you able to predict the arrival time of the particular bus at a specific timing (eg. an hour later) instead of the next bus?
iris NextBus provides real time information on the present location of the buses. Hence, the information provided is accurate at the time of query. Furthermore, the travelling time of the bus is constantly changing depending on traffic conditions, which could change within minutes. Thus, the shorter the interval between the query time and arrival time, the more accurate the estimation will be.

  Top ^

How accurate is iris NextBus in terms of its arrival time estimation?
Based on our trial, the accuracy of iris NextBus is about +3 minutes and –3 minutes.

However, the travelling time of the bus is constantly changing depending on traffic conditions, which could change within minutes. Thus, the shorter the interval between the query time and arrival time, the more accurate the estimation will be.

  Top ^

Why is it that when I repeat my query, I sometimes encounter a sudden drop in prediction time (eg. Next bus predicted to arrive in 10 minutes but in 2 minutes time, the revised prediction indicates 3 minutes)?
Sudden drops in prediction time do occur when a bus is introduced half way on-service and this can be scheduled to address demand over certain stretches of road or it could be to replace a disrupted bus (eg. accident, breakdown, etc.).

  Top ^

Can we know if the next bus arriving is a wheelchair-accessible bus (WAB)?
Yes. The results will indicate '(WAB)' following the estimated time in minutes.

  Top ^

Can iris NextBus predict arrival times for all bus services including non-basic services (eg. Chinatown Direct) and for all bus stops islandwide, including bus stops at Johor Bahru?
iris NextBus can predict arrival times for all SBS Transit bus services including Chinatown Direct which start with CT and Services with suffixes A, B, e, M & N except for Service 170X.

There is no iris NextBus prediction for 170X due to the dynamic operational conditions between Kranji and Woodlands Checkpoint.

iris NextBus on the Web
What are the requirements to use iris NextBus on the Web?
To enjoy this service, you would need to have internet access.

  Top ^

Do I need to pay SBS Transit to access iris NextBus on the Web?
No. You do not need to pay SBS Transit to access iris NextBus, only the relevant internet access charges, if applicable.

  Top ^

What does it mean when 'Service is likely to be affected by enroute conditions' is indicated?
When this message appears, it is because we have detected that the bus has not moved more than 500m over in the past 5 minutes. It is likely that this bus is held up by traffic or there has been an incident causing the bus to be stationary.

Without dedicated bus lane, we have to share the road with other motorists and this can result in our buses travelling at a slower speed if the road is heavy with traffic. Other possible causes of delays are:

  • Heavy boarding and/or alighting activities which require the buses to stop for a longer period of time.
  • Incidents such as a fight, molest or even medical emergency on board may cause buses to be delayed and possibly even disrupt a journey.
  • Bad weather condition where Bus Captains have to exercise greater caution when travelling on the road for the safety for both passengers and other road users.

  Top ^

How can I save frequently queried bus service and number?
To save prefixed queries, you would need to register with us as a My iris NextBus user. You can click on "Add to My iris NextBus" when the results are displayed to save it as a shortcut link within your My iris NextBus page. You can save as many prefixed queries as you like.

  Top ^

Can I personalise My iris NextBus to include bus interchanges or terminals?
No. NextBus departure feature is currently not available for My iris NextBus. Only NextBus arrival can be personalised for My iris NextBus.

iris on the Mobile via GPRS

How do I access iris on the Mobile?
To access iris via GPRS, logon to www.sbstransit.com.sg/mobileiris for mobile phones or http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/iris3/pdanextbus.aspx for PDAs.

After keying in the addresses into your mobile phones or PDAs, you will be given three options. You can query either for bus arrival time at bus stop or bus departure time from an interchange or how to get from point-to-point using the Journey Planner.

NextBus Arrival at bus stops

For bus arrival time at bus stop, you need to input the desired service number and bus stop number where you would like to catch the bus. If you do not know the bus stop number, a bus stop number search function is available under the "Not sure, click here". Under the bus stop search function, you need to input the road name of the bus stop where you are catching the bus. After which, you have to select the bus stop and the bus service from the list of bus stops and services provided.

GPRS BUS STOPS

NextBus Departure at interchange

For bus departure time at interchanges, you need to key in the service that you are interested in and select the bus interchange where you are catching the bus.

Depending on whether you access this service on WiFi or via GPRS, different charges will apply. If you are a regular user of certain bus services at a certain bus stop or interchange, you may wish to bookmark the result page after you have performed the query to save on data transmission charges when you next perform the query.

Journey Planner

To find out how to get from where you are or from a particular bus stop to your destination or a bus stop near your destination, you will need to key in the bus stop number of the bus stop where you will be starting your journey and that of the bus stop at your destination. If you do not know the bus stop number of either the starting or destination bus stops or both, a bus stop number search function is available under the "Not sure, click here". Under the bus stop search function, you will need to input the road name of the bus stop where you are catching the bus. After which, you will need to select the bus stop and the bus service from the list of bus stops and services provided.

GPRS is the acronym for General Packet Radio Service - a packet-based mobile data communication technology that enables data to be transmitted to users of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) mobile phones at speeds of up to 115kbps (speed supported is phone dependent).

GPRS can be utilised for services such as WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) access, SMS (Short Message Service), MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), and for internet communication services such as email and web access.

  Top ^

Please check with your service provider (SingTel, M1, StarHub) for details on activating GPRS services on your mobile phone.

  Top ^

What is the estimated size of data transmission per iris NextBus query on the mobile?
For a new query, the estimated size of data transmission depends on the queried service and whether "Not sure, click here" function was used. If you bookmark a query and repeat the same query, the estimated size of data transmission drops to less than 2kb (which cost about 1 cent based on the charges for some telcos). As such, do bookmark your frequently queried bus service and bus stop number to save on data transmission size and charges.

What is the description in our bill when we are charged for iris NextBus service?
It will be reflected as "iris NextBus."

  Top ^

Will I be informed if there is a delay in the bus arrival?
Yes, you will receive up to two complimentary sms updates if there is a delay in the predicted arrival time.

If the predicted arrival time is:
  • More than 10 minutes - you will receive an sms update only if the delay is more than 5 minutes long.
  • Between 3 and 10 minutes, you will get an sms update if the delay is more than 3 minutes long.
For example, you sent an sms query at 10am and are informed that your next bus is expected to arrive in 16 minutes' time (i.e. 10.16 am). iris NextBus will now automatically perform a midpoint check at 10.08am to see if there is a change. On this occasion, assuming that there is a road congestion which results in the bus being delayed with expected arrival time now set at 15 minutes i.e at 10.23am. This delay is 7 minutes longer than the earlier given time. As such, iris NextBus will send you a free sms update on your next bus arrival time as the delay is more than 5 minutes long. This process will be repeated and if there is a further delay, another sms update will be sent to you. Up to two sms updates will be sent to you at no cost.

  Top ^

Will I be informed if a bus service skip any of its bus stop(s) due to a temporary route diversion?
Yes, you will receive a complimentary sms notification if a bus service is not able to call at a particular bus stop due to a route diversion. If the diversion is planned, for example, road closure due to an event, the sms will indicate the duration of the route diversion. However, if a route diversion is unexpected and hence unplanned, for example the road is rendered impassable due to an accident, flooding etc, you will also receive a complimentary sms if the bus bypasses your bus stop. However, as the situation can be dynamic, we will not be able to offer information concerning the duration of such diversions.
