SBS Transit is investing $147 million in 400 new Euro V buses, bringing the total number of new buses bought in the last four years to 1,100.
The latest purchase, which is part of an ongoing exercise to renew SBS Transit’s fleet of 2,800 buses, will bring the total investment in new buses since 2005 to $427 million. Significantly, it will reduce the average age of SBS Transit’s fleet significantly with about 40% of the fleet expected to consist of new buses by the end of 2009.
The new buses from Scania also hold the distinction as Asia’s first European Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicles (EEV). The Euro V EEV buses deliver better emission performance than standard Euro V models. For instance, the emission of unburnt hydrocarbons, which produce ozone that irritates the eyes and lungs and cause breathing difficulties, is effectively reduced by some 46% or from 0.46g/kWh to 0.25g/kWh when compared to traditional Euro IV and V engines.
In the area of commuter accessibility and convenience, these new Scania buses will continue to adopt a low-floor and wheel-chair friendly design to cater to the needs of the elderly, the less mobile and passengers-in-wheelchairs.
Mr Gan Juay Kiat, Chief Operating Officer, SBS Transit, said: “Our investment in the new Scanias underscore our commitment not just to our commuters but to the environment as well.”
