Eight new Wheelchair Accessible Bus (WAB) services – 13, 15, 36, 52, 54, 57, 291 and 333 – will be launched this Thursday, 3 December 2009 to commemorate World Disability Day. This will bring the total number of WAB services introduced this year to 16. In all, SBS Transit will have 38 WAB services running on the roads.
The steady introduction of WAB services offers 24-year-old Ms Lee Yuan Ping, an Accounts Assistant Executive with the Handicaps Welfare Association, who is wheelchair-bound due to spina bifida, greater convenience and affordability in her daily travel.
“Ever since wheelchair accessible bus services were launched, I’ve been able to cut down on costly taxi rides,” Ms Lee enthused, “Now I am looking forward to more of such services so I’ve more choices.”
IT Support Assistant, Mr Lim Koon Heng, 43 concurred, “With more WAB services, I can hop onto different buses and do sightseeing during my free time as many places are becoming wheelchair-accessible.” The ardent bus fan admitted it is a joy to be able to travel to various parts of Singapore on public transport.
SBS Transit’s Executive Director, Mr Gan Juay Kiat assured, “We are committed to rolling out more WAB services to meet the needs of passengers in wheelchairs with the increase in wheelchair-friendly ground infrastructure and facilities.”

Service 52 operates from Bishan Interchange to Jurong East Interchange. It provides connection to Bishan Road, Sin Ming Avenue, Upper Thomson Road, Lornie Road, Adam Road, Jalan Anak Bukit, Clementi Road, Commonwealth Avenue West, Boon Lay Way, Toh Guan Road and Jurong East Central.

Service 54 operates from Bishan Interchange to New Bridge Road. It provides connection to Bishan Road, Marymount Road, Thomson Road, Newton Road, Scotts Road, Paterson Road, Irwell Bank Road, River Valley Road, New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street.
