Extended Engineering Hours on Sengkang-Punggol Light Rail Transit on Sundays

*updated on 31 July 2020*

To ensure that train services remain reliable and comfortable, SBS Transit will conduct regular maintenance works on certain parts of the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems during passenger service hours on six Sundays from 26 July to 6 September 2020. During this period (excluding the National Day Public Holiday on 9 August), train service will operate as usual on one platform while the other will be closed for works. Service on both platforms will commence as usual on Monday.

During these extended engineering hours, maintenance works will be conducted on the guideways, which are paths that the Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) move on. Specifically, works will be carried out on some of the finger-joints of the concrete plinths that have shifted over time due to the constant movements of the LRVs on them. These finger-joints bridge the gaps in the concrete plinths, catering for the plinths’ expansion and contraction arising from temperature changes, and provide a smooth and comfortable ride for commuters. Works will involve hacking the ends of the concrete plinths which have spalled due to wear and tear, re-installing reinforcement bars and repositioning the finger-joints before cementing them into place again. The extended engineering hours will allow the hacking works to be done during the day to minimise disturbance to residents at night and cater time for the concrete to be cured before it is safe for the LRVs to run on the plinths.

Maintenance works will also be carried out on the switch machines that are located at sections of the guideway which guide the LRVs.

To minimise inconvenience to residents, temporary sound barriers will be put up and customer service officers will be deployed to offer assistance to commuters when works are being carried out. Publicity posters will be put up at LRT stations to keep commuters informed of the maintenance works carried out. Commuters will also be informed via announcements on the LRT platforms and alerts on SBS Transit’s social media pages.
