More train trips added to the North East Line

To cater to growing demand1 for rail services, SBS Transit will be adding 34 more trips a week to the North East Line during peak hours. This will commence from Monday, 4 January 2016.

During the weekday morning peak hours from 7.30am to 9.30am, 25 trains will be in service to improve capacity with 20 new trips added. The addition of two new trains will improve the average waiting time with 60% of train trips arriving at intervals of 2.5 minutes. Currently, they arrive at between 2.5 minutes and 3.2 minutes.

On weekday evenings, between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, 23 trains - which is also an increase of two trains - will be on the Line to improve capacity. Fourteen new trips will be added to the evening peak schedule and this will improve frequency. It is expected that 40% of evening trips will arrive at intervals of 2.5 minutes. Currently, they arrive at between 2.8 minutes and 3.5 minutes.

We will continue to monitor travel demand on the North East Line and will add more trips when required.

1 Average daily ridership on NEL has increased by about 4.5% from 2014 to about 536,000 in September 2015.
