SBS Transit Launch Escalator Safety Awareness Programme For North East Line Mrt Stations

20 August 2005 Take the lifts, else make sure you hold onto the handrail while on the escalator. These 2 key messages are part of a new Escalator Safety Awareness programme that was launched today by SBS Transit.

As part of the programme, large size posters featuring the following key messages by its Safety Ambassador for the programme - Ms Quan Yi Fong, MediaCorp Artiste will be placed at all North East Line (NEL) Stations:

• Passengers travelling with young children or the elderly, please use the lifts. Thank you.
• When using the escalator, please hold onto the handrails. Thank you.

At the launch ceremony officiated by Madam Cynthia Phua, MP for Aljunied GRC, highlighted : These may seem to be simple messages but they are very important ones.

Madam Phua added : The initiative to launch this awareness programme has clearly demonstrated the concern of safe travelling in the stations that SBS Transit has for its passengers. I understand that on average, there are about 3 escalator accidents at NEL stations per month, with about half involving elderly passengers. Prevention is always better than cure and we want to make sure that accidents are prevented. I urge all users to play their part by practising safety habits by using the lifts and holding onto the handrails on the escalators. Let us give this programme our wholehearted support.

To lend support to the programme, its Safety Ambassador, Ms Quan Yi Fong, was also present at the launch and led the guests, including Friends of SBS Transit, senior citizens and grassroots leaders from Aljunied GRC Paya Lebar Division, on a safety tour, where they were given some tips on safe travelling at the NEL stations.

About SBS Transit NEL …
