SBS Transit Extends $3.3 Mil Package To Reduce Impact Of Bus And Rail Fare Increases

30 May 2005 – The Public Transport Council (PTC) today announced fare revisions for both bus and train fares. The fare revision will come into effect on 1 July 2005 .

Under the new fare structure, adult EZ-Link fares will increase by 1 to 2 cents for buses and 1 to 3 cents for trains while adult cash fares and single trip ticket fares will increase by 10 cents across the board. Children and student fares, as well as prices for e-stamps will not be increased. (Please see Annex for details of the fare revision.)

On our part, SBS Transit will be introducing a $3.3 million package to help mitigate the impact of the fare increase on certain groups of passengers. This package means that the actual increase in fares will work out to a smaller 1.8% for SBS Transit passengers.

The package of measures comprises the following:

  • Extending the concession period for senior citizens to start from 9am on weekdays and to last the whole day on Saturdays and Sundays. This means that senior citizens pay concessionary fares for more hours in a day, as compared to the current fare structure where they only enjoy concession fares between 10am and 4pm , and after 7pm on weekdays, and after 10am on Saturdays. The extension of the concession hours is expected to benefit some 50,000 senior citizens trips on SBS Transit buses and trains each day and will cost the company $2.2 million per annum;
  • Keeping the maximum fare cap for any single journey on our bus network at $1.90. This means that notwithstanding the fare increase, commuters travelling on SBS Transit basic bus service network (ie all bus services except premium and basic-plus bus services such as Express services, FastForward services, CityBuzz, ChinaTown Direct etc) and using ez-link cards will only need to pay a maximum fare of $1.90 to complete any single journey, regardless of the number of transfers required. This will benefit commuters who may have to make several transfers to get to their destinations. Keeping the maximum fare cap at $1.90 will cost the company another $200,000 – on top of the current annual cost of $1 million;
  • Contributing $1 million to the "Public Transport Fund" to help the poor and needy. Details of the Fund have been announced separately.

SBS Transit Executive Director, Mr Ong Boon Leong, said: “We recognize there is never a good time to raise fares. That is why we have taken pains to ensure that as far as possible, the impact of the fare increase is mitigated for the poor and needy through the Public Transport Fund.

“Also, we decided not to apply for any increase for children and student fares as well as e-stamp prices. As children and student fares and e-stamp prices are not increased, the average household will largely see increases for only the working adults in the family. On average, assuming an adult takes four trips a day, the increase in transport cost per day is about 4 cents to 8 cents or $1.20 to $2.40 per month. In addition, senior citizens will be able to enjoy longer concessionary hours for their trips on our buses and trains.”
