Taxi too expensive? Bus too crowded during the morning rush hour? From today, we have the perfect solution to office workers headed to the Central Business District.
ComfortDelGro subsidiaries, SBS Transit and ComfortDelGro Bus, will launch a total of 15 premium bus services which offer commuters direct connections from 11 neighbourhood towns and private estates -- Clementi, Jurong West, Jurong East, Jurong Town (Yuan Ching Road), Teban Gardens, Bedok North, Bedok Reservoir, Changi (Flora Road), Pasir Ris, Yio Chu Kang and Toa Payoh -- to the Robinson Road/Shenton area. Unlike normal bus services, these premium services have been introduced to cater specifically to the morning rush hour crowd. They will therefore run only in the morning peak hours and travel in just one direction.
The concept of premium services was introduced to cater to a group of commuters who are willing to pay a bit more for a more comfortable ride and yet not as it would cost for a taxi ride. Premium services are also designed to make maximum use of expressways to offer commuters a more direct and faster journey. They will also adopt flexible routing by avoiding areas which are known to be congested during the peak periods.
SBS Transit's 13 premium services will operate single trips from Mondays to Fridays (excluding public holidays), while ComfortDelGro Bus' two services will operate two trips each. All the trips are scheduled to arrive in the CBD area before 9.00am which is the typical starting time for most offices.
These services, however, will continue on their regular routes except Services 56 and 195 which will be diverted to loop at Temasek Avenue.
Flat fares will be charged. SBS Transit's premium services are priced between $2.70 and $3.00 per trip while ComfortDelGro Bus' services cost between $4.50 and $5.00. There will be no concessionary travel but standard transfer rebates will apply for commuters using ez-link cards on SBS Transit services.
Mr Gan Juay Kiat, Chief Operating Officer of SBS Transit, said: "We are constantly looking at ways to serve the diverse needs of our commuting public. The introduction of premium services enables us to cater to the needs of a niche group of commuters who are willing to pay more and don't want to jostle with the crowds."
Echoing this point, ComfortDelGro Bus Chief Executive Officer, Mr Lawrence Tan, said: "ComfortDelGro Bus is excited to launch premium services as an alternative for commuters. As part of the ComfortDelGro group, we have greater synergy in working with SBS Transit to offer more services collectively. Net result is that we can serve commuters better."
For the inaugural launch, SBS Transit is giving away exclusive lunches at Pier Eleven to 13 lucky commuters in a lucky draw.
